Hey guys 👋🏾 it’s been a while since I’ve written! I have some new things coming down the pipeline, until then, enjoy this throw back blog detailing my my first trip to Detroit back in 2018. 💋
My mother is a huge Kem fan and one of our favorite mommy daughter pass times is visiting new places and enjoying live music. We’ve travelled to see Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Beyoncé and Jay-Z just to name a few. So when the opportunity presented itself for us to see a new city, rich with Black American history paired with great food with an opportunity to enjoy great R&B soul music, we jumped all over a weekend of fun!
Getting to the “Motor City” as it is affectionately dubbed was quite the experience with flight delays and less than ideal airport security. Not to mention my mom missed her connecting flight to Detroit, thus having to drive all night from Chicago in order to make it in time for our trip. We maybe had 6 hours of sleep over a 48 hour period. All I can say is, I don’t fool with the old heads 😂, they party for real.
Day one in Detroit was full of great food and wonderful cultural experiences. Our day started at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History @thewrightmuseum. At the time of our visit, the #WeRise exhibit was on display in the main showroom. It was full of rich history and imagery that was mind blowing 🤯, provocative and penetrating. If you’ve experienced National Museum of African American History and Culture, this museum is a close rival.❤️❤️❤️
For lunch we headed over to Kuzzos Chicken and Waffles @kuzzoschickenandwaffles! The food and service were superb and the entrepreneurial spirit of the block was a refreshing site to see. Can you say #BlackOwned everything 🙌🏾👏🏾😍! 🖤🖤🖤
Our next stop was to @cheneparkdetroit, now known as the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater for the Kem @musicbykem and India Arie @indiaarie concert! Round of applause 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾for real singing, showmanship and music artistry at its absolute finest! Not to mention the best views of the #DetroitRiver and a sunset that was out of this world. In a nutshell, GO VISIT #DETROIT!!! ❤️
Day Two in Detroit was also AMAZING 😉!! We started our day serving at 🙏🏾Second Baptist Church of Detroit, in Downtown Detroit. This downtown Detroit church is the oldest religious institution owned by blacks in the Midwest. Second Baptist claimed a mission to free slaves and have them enjoy the full privileges of American citizenship.
After service, we went on a brief tour below the church of the #UndergroundRailroad and learned more about the churches role in the abolition of slavery.
Next up, brunch @fishbonesgreektowndetroit!!! Great food selection in a beautiful space, I am still full. 🦐🥙🍣🍪🍾- -
@motownmuseum was all that I expected and more! To know that such musical 🕺🏾💃🏽greats like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and the Jackson’s were groomed and trained in the very rooms in which I stood, was mind blowing 🤯! The glove and hat that #MichaelJackson wore the first time he did the moon walk on national television sits in the museum and it is a site to see! 👑 - - - The rest of the day was lazy, hanging by the #DetroitRiver enjoying the breeze! - -
Now that I am home, I miss #Detroit and cannot wait to return to the chocolate city! So much history in a city that is coming back from so much! Don’t take my word, go and visit for yourself!
