2019 Recap Newark Arts Festival - Part 2

My second day in Newark started early at the “Wonder Woman Champagne Brunch.” Hosted within NAF curator Armisey Smith exhibition “Spread the Spectrum - A Modulation of Women Artist,” attendees indulged in finger foods with full access to the creators of the works within the space.

Next up, a VIP bus tour through historic neighborhoods featuring stunning public art, surprise stops along the way, mojitos, a complementary swag bag and a post tour cocktail reception. The “Murals and Mojitos,” public arts tour, curated by Jo-El Lopez and hosted by Khalil Chaneyfield, featured jaw dropping art by Yasmin de Jesus, Gladys Baker Grauer and the amazing collaborations of fourteen artists, including six artists from Newark; who created massive sculptures, mosaics and other works of art attached to the facade of the switching station are just a few of the stops along the way. Fun fact, in the future the city with be partnering with these street artists to sell prints of their works so that fans and admires can have a tangible connection to the art. Also stop by Akwaaba Gallery, it’s amazing 😉

From there, I booked it to Linden St, to the “Sacred Art,” an interactive fashion, hair and visual arts experience. All I can say is VIBE!!!! If you’re looking for urban glam, shop at Off The Hanger, you’ll be blessed.

Last stop of the evening, “Hear Her Roar: An Evening of Performance Art.” I laughed, I cried and I was captivated. Words cannot describe this experience, all I can truly say is it felt safe.

My last day of the festival was spent with RyArMo Photography Studio in the “Open Doors, Studio Tour.” In keeping with the Newark Arts Festivals beginnings as an artist studio tour, the open door studio tour is an annual highlight. It provided exclusive access to private artists studios and the opportunity to experience arts in action. And can we talk about the food!!! Chicken and waffle sliders, Mac and cheese combined with good drinks. 🍹

All and all, I loved this festival. While, I attended quite a few events, I only tapped the surface of the festival. Can’t wait for next year. Until next time. ✈️💋
